A garden hose is one of those purchases where the deciding factor is almost never the lawn. It is the trip from the spigot to the shed, the coil that lives on the patio when the season ends, and how many times a week somebody has to drag forty pounds of wet rubber across a … Read more
Raised beds are the fastest way to grow great vegetables and the fastest way to lose an hour of your evening to a watering can. The soil sits above ground, so the sides give up moisture from every direction, and the mix inside a typical bed drains hard after a week of sun. A watering … Read more
The best garden kneelers for seniors are 2-in-1 convertible kneeler benches with sturdy side handles that let you push yourself upright without loading your knees or lower back. We put 10 of them through raised-bed weeding, potting and patio sessions, and the stand-up handholds mattered far more than any other spec. Here is the thing … Read more
A hose reel for a large garden needs three things: enough capacity to hold 150 to 300 ft of 5/8-inch hose, a metal frame that will not rust through in a single winter, and either four wheels or a fixed anchor point so you are not dragging that much hose across the lawn every time … Read more
An oscillating sprinkler is the right tool for a rectangular lawn, and it is the one shape of grass where this type of head genuinely earns its place. The best pruning shears for arthritic hands are ratchet pruners, geared or rolling-handle models, and lightweight bypass shears with padded non-slip grips. All three cut with less squeeze force: a ratchet breaks one hard cut into several small stages, a geared handle multiplies whatever force your hand can already produce, and a cushioned grip spreads … Read more
Most people buy the wrong hand pruners for roses, and they find out a season later. An anvil-style shear crushes a hollow rose cane instead of severing it, a dull blade shreds the tissue it should be slicing, and a pruner sized for someone else’s hand leaves you with a blister before the job is … Read more
Clay soil does two things to a digging tool. It refuses to break apart cleanly, and it puts a bending load straight down the tines every time you push. I have watched enough forks come out of heavy ground bent into soft hooks to know that the choice of steel, the shape of the tine … Read more
